Happenings on the Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains

Weekend Coffee Share

Hello there Adventurous Friends & Family, greetings from Georgia. How you doing this 6th week of 2024? It's 51 degrees out this Saturday morning with a 60 percent chance of rain this evening about suppertime. We went on a good camping trip this week. We watched several beautiful sunrises & several beautiful sunsets. We saw lots of wildlife especially armadillos. Kevin enjoys being the camp cook therefore that makes my enjoyment of camping a lot greater. We camped in an area where cotton grows & spanish moss thrives. There were lots of pine trees that produce huge pinecones. We saw several things we'd not ever seen before while out exploring. Kevin did a little squirrel hunting, we both did some fishing. We didn't get any meat for the frying pan as we had hoped & kinda planned for. The fish had size limits that we didn't reach. We gave it several good attempts at catching a trophy size largemouth bass over 24 inches. The squirrels stayed hid while hunting but we saw several while out riding around site seeing. Today I'm working on putting away the camping stuff, but 1st, grab a coffee or your favorite beverage & I'll tell you about a few more of the things we did & saw while out camping, walk with me.

We set up camp in the designated campground overlooking the lake. The camp
area was dispersed, if you need it you had to bring it. We brought wood along to
have a campfire or 2. We were too busy & ended up never even building up a fire
in the firepit, the little pile of rocks you see there.  It rained the 1st day, so the
awning we added came in handy.

There were firebreaks all
over the place that made good
 walking trails.

We were surprised to discover that
there were flowers in bloom. I
asked Siri & this is sweet smelling
Carolina Jessamine. It's vine stays
leafed out green all year long. These
pretty little yellow flowers were
everywhere out in the woods.

This is a place where paper comes from. It was interesting to see these
longleaf pine trees in their different stages of growth.

The biggest bed of palmettos
we saw while out walking.

Kevin spied this lion's mane
mushroom. According to Siri,
it's edible.

This sign was posted at all
the boat ramps & fishing docks.
We sited 5 gators sunning &
swimming out in the water while
fishing. We watched the gators
through binoculars & wasn't ever
close enough to get a picture, thank
goodness. Siri said gators
are not aggressive unless provoked.

Spanish moss hanging
in the trees. According to
Siri, the moss lives
off the air for it's food &
moisture not the trees.

This memorial was marked on the map, but it wasn't pinpointed to it's exact location. We wondered what it was all about. We came across the memorial one day while walking one of the firebreak trails. We saw several woodpeckers in the area during our visit & assumed they were the red-cockaded woodpeckers that this memorial tells about providing the habitat management for.

I spied this upside down carrot.
According to Siri, its
called stinkhorn mushroom.
It's hollow on the inside.

I spied this different shape of
stinkhorn mushroom. I didn't
attempt to smell these to see if
they stunk. I usually don't go around
smelling mushrooms anyways. I'm
always afraid I'll ingest some of
their poisonous spores if they were to
 have any.

Rose soaking up some sun
during a picnic.

Exploring the cypress knees.
According to Siri, the knee's
purpose is to perhaps help the roots
get air due to their swampy habitat &
might help with erosion among
several other possible things. Seems it's
really unknown what the knees purpose
really is for.

Mickey & Mini hanging out
at camp in a tree that has
ferns going on it.

These are some of the things that's been going on in my neck of the woods, how has your week been?

Happenings on the Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains

Weekend Coffee Share

Hello there Adventurous Friends & Family, greetings from Georgia. How you doing this 4th week of 2024? It's 54 degrees out this early Friday morning as I get ready to head into work here in a couple hours. We've had quite a warm-up in the weather since last week. Rain was forecasted for about every day this week & it did rain about every day. This weekend we're getting the camper stocked & ready for an upcoming camping trip. I'm going to get caught up on laundry, Kevin is going to work on putting a ceiling in the workshop. I'm hoping we can get in a jeep ride & picnic since we've not done that in a few weeks. We sold a few of the hens & a rooster this week along with several dozens of eggs. The recipients seemed to be very pleased. The rooster continued to crow & the hens continued laying eggs were the reports I got, so their move went smooth & successful. That downsized the adult chicken flock to make room for the baby chicks Kevin just ordered for spring arrival. We're going to try to set & hatch some eggs under a hen too, when the weather warms up & stays warm. Grab a coffee or your favorite beverage & I'll tell you about Grands visit last weekend, walk with me...

*  Nana Grandjoy Camp Run-A-Muk - We enjoyed having Grand for the weekend. I took him to his basketball game. There was snow on top of the mountain. We stopped at the new DG Market on the way back from the game. Instead of Super Walmart, it's Super Dollar General Store, was my thought about the place. The store was neat & clean, the aisles were bigger, there were no stock carts in the aisles blocking the merchandise. I had plans to work out in the yard with Grand, picking up sticks & having a hotdog roast. It was too cold & windy, so we stayed inside & did some other things.

Brownies were made & Trouble was played.

2 small tackle boxes of fishing lures were put into one super duplex tackle box.
There was discussion about the names of each lure & how it worked.

Big Macs for supper.

Lego creations were built, I helped with
color sorting & finding pieces when
needed.

Kevin got the last brownie as
a surprise in his lunch.

Rose got a new toy.

Displaying the Lego camping creation
on the mantel for a time since it's getting
camping time weather. The little picnic table
is so cute along with the skunk & beaver.

Weekend Coffee Share

Hello there Adventurous Friends & Family, greetings from Georgia. How you doing this 3rd week of 2024, it's 10 degrees out this Sunday morning. Kevin headed over 1st thing to feed the chickens & let them outside. They want to go outside no matter what weather it is. Kevin is fixing us bear meat tenderloin, eggs, biscuits & gravy for breakfast this morning & I'm fixing to help him. Grand spent the weekend & he's working Legos. This week we took a drive over the mountain, went shopping & ate at Captain D's. I got Valentines & a few things for the new Grandbabies. Kevin got some more parts for the boat & fishing stuff. Grab a coffee or your favorite beverage & I'll show you a few of the things from our shopping bags. See if you know what the things are, walk with me...

Happenings on the Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains

Weekend Coffee Share

Hello there Adventurous Friends & Family, greetings from Georgia. How you doing this 52nd & final week of 2023? On Christmas day it rained all day with temperatures in the mid 50s. There were reports of power outages in our area due to the wind, but we never lost power. Our Christmas supper was squirrel dumplings & sweet tea along with classic no-bake cookies that I threw together last minute. We spent the day relaxing, eating, watching Christmas movies & registering a boat.  Yeap, Kevin got us a boat for Christmas. Grab a coffee or your favorite beverage & I'll tell you about the 2 surprises we got for Christmas. Rumor has it that we're supposed to get a BIG snow over the weekend, one compared to the Blizzard of 93, so I'll fill you in on that next week, come walk with me...

A before picture of the boat. Kevin is working
on doing some revamping. We brought the
boat home then went straight to Walmart's
boat accessories department. The new
 seats are already in place.

Rose checking out the boat.
"Wonder what's in there."

*  Our 2 Christmas surprises....

We're expecting our 10th Grandbaby in June.

We're expecting our 1st Great-Grandbaby in August.

Kevin is very pleased with the
colors of eggs we're getting.  He
choose the varieties of chickens
on purpose to get all these different
 colors of eggs...blue, green, cream,
brown.

These are some of the things going on in my neck of the woods, how has your week been?
The things I ordered for the new Grands
arrived, the babies are going to love these.
Kevin has plenty of time to put them together.
