Happenings on the Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains

Weekend Coffee Share

Hello there Adventurous Friends & Family, greetings from Georgia. How you doing? Our Memorial Day weekend was mostly quiet. It rained on & off the whole weekend. The garden needed the water. Kevin got a turn with the stomach bug. I've been watching the Sweet Magnolias series again on Netflix. There's a new Season coming out in a couple weeks. Kevin is still waiting on the 02 sensor to put on the side by side. He worked in the garden a lot this week & made us several nice salads. The okra is coming up & we made a pie. Grab a coffee or your favorite beverage & tell me about your holiday weekend then I'm going to make June birthday cards & get ready for a Summer Kickoff Splash Blast. I'm making lists, gathering up stuff & need to go to the dollar store & the grocery store sometime this weekend.

Kevin's parents & 2 of our Grandbabies.

I met Daughter at the cemetery for
decoration & a picnic. That's an AI
data center being built down there.

Pretty colored orange &
purple flowers on Kevin's
grandparent's grave.

I took Grands to the lake, found this
at the water's edge.

The splash pad is open.

Cookies were made & lots
of the dough was eaten.

America-opoly

The daylilies are blooming.

Kevin picked the strawberries & cut
them up. I made the filling.

Happenings on the Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains

Weekend Coffee Share

Hello there Adventurous Friends & Family, greetings from Georgia. How you doing? Whooooo's ready for summer? We're having a rainy weekend, of course we are, the rodeo is in town. Grands scored in the 90s % on their homeschool nationally standardized achievement test, Yay!  My Nana Grandjoy Camp Run-A-Muk theme this summer is owls. I've been getting stuff together for Beach Vacation, Christmas in June. Kevin has been putting strawberries & fish in the freezer & working on the side by side. We had a good ride with Son-in-Law & Grands. I'm just getting over a 24 hour bug that's making it's rounds, suspected to be that norovirus. Daughter got a bad case of it all of a sudden, ambulance had to come check her out. It was a scary few minutes there for a time. They mentioned symptoms sometimes lasts for hours, sometimes for days. Grab a coffee or your favorite beverage & I'll tell you how many owlets Moma owl had & wishing everyone a happy Memorial Day weekend as we enjoy our time together, this weekend marking the start of summer, remembering the meaning of the holiday - honoring the fallen soldiers who sacrificed for our freedom, thanking them that their bravery will never be forgotten. Also, it's decoration at the cemetery & we'll be visiting graves, placing flowers & remembering loved ones.

It was our 1st time riding at Windrock. Son-in-Law has rode it several times, so he was the leader & tour guide. The ride was a little faster pace than I like to ride, though that is usually how it is riding with a group. We put in about 45 miles. There were a few spots that were rougher than I like. Kevin says those spots make a ride challenging, exciting & fun. I got out & took pictures & did not ride over those too scary for me big challenging fun rocks. There were a few mishaps during the day, that's all part of it sometimes. There were 3 flat tires including a trailer tire 1st thing in the morning on the way. One of the side by side tires had 10 plugs put in it's gash & it held.  There were a couple of broke axles. Both Grands fell/jumped off their 4 wheelers. They were both ok & it was a good little learning experience. One kid playing in the mud, had to be winched out twice. Our check engine light came on near the end of the ride & the side by side went into limp mode. Kevin stopped & restarted several times & we were able to finish the ride. It was a fun day! Kevin checked the error codes on our side by side & has parts ordered. He is going to replace the 02 sensor, ceiling fan switch & the fuel pump. He did some rewiring of the lights & ceiling fan to get those wires up higher out of the way of water splashes that could cause short outs.

Son-in-Law's rig, he made crawling
over this rock look so simple.

3 owlets

I've got fun learning activities about owls planned for the summer with Grands - reading, arts, puzzles, games, crafts & dissecting owl pellets. Also, since it's the 250th 4th of July celebration this year, we're doing activities about states. America-opoly is on the list of games to play.

Food art owl.

Take a road trip go fish card game.

I stopped by the Veterans Memorial with Grands in honor of Memorial Day.

Date night for these 2.

Happenings on the Homestead in the Appalachian Mountains

Weekend Coffee Share

Hello there Adventurous Friends & Family, greetings from Georgia. How you doing this 22nd week of 2024? It's 52 degrees here this Friday morning. We've had a couple of chilly mornings the past couple of days. I just completed the last walk of my 31-day walking challenge for May. I walked every day except on Mother's Day. Me & Kevin had a good day fishing on the Lake & went to the rodeo. Me & Moma postponed our day going to cemeteries. We had a thunderstorm pass through that did a smidge of damage around our place. Our driveway was blocked & our power was out for about 8 hours. The power meter box to the workshop had to be repaired before the power could be turned back on down there. We put more strawberries in the freezer. I made another strawberry pie. Searching for recipes that uses frozen strawberries is on my to-do list. Grab a coffee or your favorite beverage & I'll tell you a little more about these things before heading out to a family picnic this weekend to celebrate my last day of work & the Grand's last day of school for this school year, come walk with me...

I did it. I made it to 30 years.

Happy FriYay! It's the last day
 of my work career.

Kevin noticed these Indian Pipes
while we were exploring around
the lakebed. There were lots
of them.

*  We brought home 6 fish from the lake. Kevin cooked burgers. I made squash casserole. We had a picnic out on the front porch to kick start summer & to celebrate our freedoms, remembering Fallen Heros that gave their life. We went to the rodeo since Kevin got tickets from Employer being a sponsor.

My original recipe for squash casserole don't call
for the bacon & sour cream like this one in the
church cookbook does. Yeap, it was a delicious
addition that made a difference.

Fairgrounds where the rodeo took place.

I tried some of Jerrie's kettle corn
at the rodeo. I went to school
with Jerrie & her husband Jamie.
They have a good thing going with
this kind of popcorn. Glad I just
got the small bag. I would have
ate every kernel no matter what
size of bag.

Pausing for a few moments at the
Veteran's Memorial at the ball
fields during one of my
30-minute walks. "All gave
some, some gave all"

Walking the River Walk Trail.

*  The results from the 31-Day Walking Challenge of intentionally walking 30 minutes each day concluded with me being able to wear a pair of pants that had been previously too tight. I enjoyed walking 1st thing in the morning & want to continue that healthy habit into retirement for the exercise, sunshine & enjoyment of the outdoors.

Walking on our property.

Walking the Quanassee Path.

*  Here's a few pictures of the early morning storm that rolled through on the Memorial Day Holiday. I've got enough sticks to pick up that will last throughout the summer. Kevin hauled the bigger stuff with the tractor.
Even though the tree & branches blocking
our driveway was small, we were
concerned what might be on the roads
in other places for Me & Moma to
get out to go to cemeteries to view
grave decorations. We had already placed
our flowers though we wanted to visit
other family member's graves.

The insides of the meter box
was damaged & had to be repaired.

"Rose, what do you think about the
power being out & we can't get out
of the driveway?"

This tree broke off about chest high &
fell over the iris. Good thing my car wasn't
parked there like I do sometimes.

The last day of my countdown to retirement.

These are some of the things that's been going on in my neck of the woods, how has your week been?
